Spotify to launch iPhone app
The music application for Spotify is projected to extend past its UK fan base and become available in the United States. Spotify is currently awaiting approval on their application that they submitted to Apple. If accepted as anticipated, Spotify would be available at the Apple App Store in a few weeks with compatabilities for the iPhone and the iPod touch for premium subscribers.
Andres Sehr, Spotify’s global community manager, is quoted on the company’s blog as saying that “we’ve finally completed work on the Spotify app for the iPhone and sent it over to the nice people at Apple.” The Spotify is the UK version of the iPhone with familiar features including the ability to listen to music even when not connected to a network. A prototype of the Spotify iPhone app was unveiled in February, yet the wait was needed to develop a more polished version before formal submission to the Apple App Store.
Spotify allows subscribers to legally download songs from the company’s music library, share their finds with their friends, and collaborate to create playlists. The simple design makes it easy to merely drag and drop a track, album, playlist, or artist into e-mail or instant messaging accounts to create a link. These links can be sent to other Spotify accounts.
Spotify is a free application that requires only registration for users who reside outside of the UK. However, subscription to the ad-free premium costs ÂŁ9.99 ($16.48) per month. The company has not released the price for the Spotify in the US.
There are a few downfalls to the release of the Spotify app in the US. The first being that the application will be available only to Spotify Premium customers. The other negative is that it will wear down the iPhone’s battery quicker due to the phone’s limitations. The Spotify application will not be able to run in the background. Also, the competition between the Spotify application and iTunes may impact Apple’s final decision.
Whether Apple decides to approve the Spotify app will neither make nor break the advancement of technology. Streaming mobile media is an inexorable development that will not be hindered.
