Apple iPhone Owners Face Severe Security Vulnerability

The Apple iPhone has found it’s way into headlines again. Two security consultants at the Black Hat security conference of 2009, have revealed a fatal flaw in the iPhone’s security that affects every iPhone, regardless of carrier. This security vulnerability could give malicious hackers back door access to your iPhone with a single text message.

Once an iPhone has been attacked with this vulnerability, hackers can gain complete access to the phone and all of it’s functions. Hackers will be able to make calls, access saved data and passwords, and even send a text message to all of your contacts capable of exploiting their iPhones as well. Anything the user is capable of doing on their iPhone, a hacker will be able to do as well.

iPhone users will know that their phone is being attacked if they receive a text message with a single square character. this message creates a backdoor to the iPhone, and opens the phone to malicious executable code being sent by further text messages. iPhone owners are being advised to turn off their iPhones if they receive this message.

A backdoor is a way to get around the protective security measures of a computer, or in this case, a cellular phone. By using a backdoor attack, hackers can easily access machines not normally accessible to them. A good analogy is to imagine trying to enter a secure building. The front door is locked and guarded, and impossible to go through without a key. However, you discover a hidden door in the back, with no locks or guards. discovering this hidden door, is essentially what Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner have done.

Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner, Professional security consultants, discovered the vulnerability discovered the vulnerability in early July, and had informed Apple of the problem. However, Apple has yet to correct this problem by releasing a patch. Apple has nt yet announced if they are working on a solution for this problem, that has left many iPhone owners sitting ducks. Until a fix is released from Apple, all iPhones will be vulnerable to this attack.
