Human Body Becomes Giant Touchscreen: Skinput

Sunday, 07 Mar 2010

A new technology developed by Microsoft and the Carnegie Mellon University allows users to turn the surface of their skin into a touch screen.

The device which makes this possible, being referred to as Skinput, relies on projection and acoustic sound technology. The device is worn by the user and projects an image onto a part of the users body, usually the hand or forearm, that mimics the screen of popular technology appliances on the market today, like phones and mp3 players. In order to make a selection the user will touch the projected image which will cause the projection device to interpret the sounds made by the gesture to generate a response from the device. Shortcuts strokes are also available that allow for pinching and sliding motions to offer even more versatility.

This product may find most use from folks who don’t enjoy exposing their expensive electronic hand held items to inclement weather or other outside factors that may cause damage. This device would allow the user to keep his or her phone safely tucked in a jacket pocket or a purse while the various functions of their phone are displayed for use right on their arm or hand. human-body-touchscreen-skinput
