Jacksonville - The Wii looks to be getting some competition in the arena of motion-based controllers. Rumors have been circulating the Internet that Sony, the creators of the Playstation 3, are set to unveil motion sensing controllers for their console at this years E3
Using light emitting diodes, the controller will be able to point at the television screen as well as have movement detected by sensors which can be attached to console. Variety is reporting that the new controller will also feature a small webcam which will have the ability to detect shapes and colors. This will give the Sony controller an advantage over the Wii Remote which currently detects only motion, a less accurate method of motion control than what Sony is expecting to unveil.
Rumors of the motion controller have been floating around since Sony filed a patent for a similar device back in 2007. The Playstation 3’s Dual Shock 3 controller already features a form of motion control, with the controller able to detect movement such as tilting. If this new controller becomes a reality, it will detect both movement of the controller and the surrounding environment.
E3 Expo 2009 will take place at the L.A. Convention Center between June 2nd and June 4th Expect an announcement at that time.
