Youtube Adds TV Shows And Movies

Sunday, 19 Apr 2009

Jacksonville - Google’s Youtube will now be offering TV shows and movies. This premium content has its own page separate from the main collection of user -generated videos. There is a tab on the main page to view this content, or simply visit
http://www.youtube.com/shows.

Companies that have agreed to share their content include Hollywood Studeos, CBS, Sony, BBC, and Independent Film Studio Lion’s Gate Entertainment. About thirteen smaller companies are being considered for partnership with Youtube. Youtube will also be working with Universal Music Group to set up an online music video site. The google-owned video site will offer movies and TV shows to U.S. consumers free of charge. Companies that own the content will get a share in the ad revenue. Shiva Rajaraman calls this move “a first step in a long commitment” during a conference call with reporters last Thursday. However, Youtube’s cataloged content mostly consists of older shows and movies like “Beverly Hillbillies” along with movies like “Cliffhanger.”
This deal has analysts talking about more doors opening to more full-length shows. Indeed, the analysts are buzzing about boosted ad revenue profit. Analysts also claim that this is a direct challenge to Fox NBC’s Hulu, a site that offers movies and TV shows freely to US consumers. With these new movies and shows however, there will be more paid ads that the consumer will be forced to sit through, similar to a commercial on television. Google claims that advertising will be their initial focus. there seems to be a price for free movies or shows on Youtube.
