Norovirus Outbreak During Luxury Cruise
Cruise ships are notorious for their susceptibility to the norovirus. The virus is spread easily especially in close confined quarters that are found on cruise ships. The virus causes intestinal symptoms like cramping, nausea and diarrhea.
Passengers aboard the Celebrity Mercury cruise ship got to experience a norovirus outbreak firsthand. At least 413 of the 2000 passengers were sickened with the virus during their 11 day cruise. Those that came down with the virus were quarantined to their cabins until symptoms subsided. In most cases, symptoms last between 24-48 hours and most recover fairly quickly.
Passengers were relieved when they pulled into port at Charleston, South Carolina today. Although, most passengers agree the staff aboard the cruise ship handled the outbreak competently. When it was apparent they were dealing with a norovirus outbreak the ship added an extra doctor and two nurses to help manage the growing number of patients on board. Over the counter medicines were distributed to the ill, free of charge.
The Celebrity Mercury is scheduled to sail out Saturday afternoon, after a thorough cleaning. The passengers who have already booked passage on the ship’s next cruise are being offered vouchers to stay the night at Charleston hotels.
