New type of diabetes drug drops weight as well as blood sugar

Saturday, 26 Jun 2010

A new type of oral diabetes medication has just passed phase three clinical trials with very promising results. This new type of medication known as Dapagliflozin, is a glucose-sodium transporter2 inhibitor, a new way to treat Type II Diabetes.

This drug has shown significant results in people that have onset diabetes or have progressed in the disease. Both groups receiving the medication showed a great reduction of sugar in their blood. Insulin levels stabilized and even those in need of insulin were able to balance their glucose levels out.

This is very important because an increasing number of people are developing the disease. Diabetes can lead to other problems such as blindness, heart disease and amputations. Controlling diabetes is a hard task.

Another benefit that the trial has shown is that people taking the Dapagliflozin lost weight over the 6 month trial period. This is in comparison to the people using the placebo who actually gained an average of 3 pounds in the same time frame. Another noticeable benefit in the test subjects was the apparent decrease in their blood pressure.

Side effects have been at this time very minimal. Since the excess sugar is released in the person’s urine, there has been an increase in urinary tract infections, but they were very mild. A few cases of hypoglycemia were noted, but the low blood sugar also appeared in the test subjects receiving the placebo.

Drug manufacturers are hoping to present the new drug to the FDA by the end of the year in hopes of winning a fast approval. new-diabetes-drug-drops-weight-with-blood-sugar
