Jacksonville – The Conficker worm is getting a lot of attention these days as having the potential to do a lot of damage to computers around the world, yet security researchers seem confident that the latest variant of the sophisticated worm will not affect the cyber world as originally expected.

The worm is expected on April 1st and its impact is being compared to Y2K. But according to Dean Turner from Symantec Security Response, the Conficker is masterminded to use the botnet which uses all infected computers in an attempt to distribute spam and other malware.

The intent of these criminals is to make money and the infrastructure would need to remain intact in order for the scam to be successful.

The Conficker is a worm that affects Windows and it was originally found in November of last year.

The Conficker B was detected in February and it was being spread through removable storage drives such as USB devices. Conficker C surfaced a few weeks back and blocked computers connecting to security sites and downloads a Trojan.

Microsoft has led the fight of the worm by gaining a partnership with all the major security companies and domain registries to form the Conficker Coalition Working Group and they also offer a Conficker remover tool.

Users can get support by downloading the Microsoft patch and by updating their antivirus and security software. Another company, Panda is offering a vaccine tool that will block any virus from spreading through USB devices.
