Microsoft: We’re Still Not Making a Phone

Thursday, 30 Apr 2009

Jacksonville – While rumors circulate on many websites about the possibility of Microsoft making a phone of their own, possibly for Verizon and dubbed “Project Pink,” Microsoft has flatly denied such a project is in the works. Microsoft’s area of focus, claims John Starkweather, is to make Windows Mobile a better platform.

Could it be, though, that Microsoft is quietly confirming the software side of a partnership with a hardware maker in making an iPhone killer? One would expect Microsoft, or any other company for that matter, to totally deny any new venture such as this until a more formal, and advantageous product announcement can be made.

With mobile devices, including more capable mobile phones being all the rage these days, it would seem to be a mistake on Microsoft’s part not to try and get into this market. Then again, manufacturers of devices that run on Windows Mobile may not be all that keen on the idea of the Redmond based company making their own device; that might cut into their profits, if the phone were successful.

No matter where you stand on the issue, new hardware is always an interesting idea. Nobody can deny that Microsoft must have done a lot of learning with the creation and sale of the Zune, but will they leverage that knowledge in a quest to get into the phone market? Or does that insight bring the realization that they’re better off not trying to?
