Wow! Sam Raimi To Direct World of Warcraft Movie
“Spiderman” director Sam Raimi is hoping to add yet another guaranteed blockbuster to his resume; the film version of the popular interactive game series, World of Warcraft.
Legendary Pictures made the announcement Tuesday, July 21, that the famous director and “Dark Knight” producer Charles Roven are confirmed in leading the project. Raimi currently directed the horror film “Drag Me to Hell” and is working on the fourth installment in the Spiderman series. World of Warcraft film production will begin after Raimi finishes the latest Spiderman film.
World of Warcraft is the most popular online role playing game nationally and internationally.
There are a reported 11 million World of Warcraft subscribers awaiting the release of the new WoW Patch 3.2 (sailor.com/news), Call of the Crusade due out before the movie.
World of Warcraft or as it is referred to, WoW, is the most played interactive game on the internet.
Blizzard Entertainment, the creator of the game franchise, teamed with Legendary Pictures three years ago to begin developing the idea for a WoW film. Blizzard first introduced the game in 1994 and has watched it grow since its debut.
Warner Brothers is said to co-finance the film along with Legendary Pictures in hopes to redeem its successful movie roster since the disappointing Watchmen.
The movie is expected to draw in more than the “elves,” “orcs,” and “humans” of the WoW environment, but all audiences.
Although most of the details need to be worked out, Warner Brothers anticipates a release date no later than 2012.
