The iPhone May Soon Be Available Through More Carriers

Tuesday, 01 Sep 2009

Apple’s iPhone has become one of the most successful all-in-one smart-phones available today. It allows the user to use the telephone, access the internet, listen to .mp3 files, and watch streaming video while on the move. This technology has been great fun for AT&T users.

However, for consumers with contracts with other carriers, this phone has not been available. Lots of customers of other carriers have wanted to use the iPhone. In France, the iPhone has enjoyed the benefit of use on multiple carriers. Apple enjoyed a 40% greater market share with the more various carrier options.

It is for this fiscal reasoning that many analysts believe that Apple will make future iPhones available on different networks. Currently, only At&T provides the proper compatible network on a large scale in the United States. Other providers, such as Verizon, do not have the coverage with the right technology. Expanding to more iPhone carriers would be great for customers who don’t have the option now.

However, Verizon has announced plans to build a new 4G network, called LTE, in 2010. If Apple were to make an iPhone available which could take advantage of this technology, it would allow Verizon users to pick up an iPhone.

This network will take a long time to develop. You couldn’t expect to see Verizon to upgrade to these quickly; to get the type of nationwide coverage with the new 4G network might require a couple of years. The iPhone is unlikely to be available for these networks until the coverage is relatively broad, as this is a probable reason why you do not see this available on other networks now.

The iPhone is a great smart-phone. It is popular with a variety of users, and its exclusive access has been an advantage to AT&T. However, it would benefit from competition between carriers. If AT&T maintains exclusive possession of the iPhone audience, you can expect a natural decrease in consumer options. It would be good for both the consumer and Apple to expand the compatible coverage to other networks. If the sales in France are any indicator, you can expect that they eventually will.
