Palm Pixi: A Dumb Name But Cool Phone
Palm will soon be releasing it’s second WebOS based device the Pixi. It is a slightly smaller, more affordable alternative to the current Palm Pre, which was released earlier this year. Palm reinvented it’s line of smart phones with the release of the Pre in June of this year. While a specific price has not been released for the new Pixi, Palm promises the more affordable phone will be available just in time for Christmas.
The existing Palm Pre includes a slide-out keyboard, while the Pixi has a fixed keypad, similar to the Centro and Treo. Keeping in line with the Pre, the Pixi will offer 8GB of memory and a GPS receiver. The Pixi also will have a 2 megapixel camera and a 2.6-inch touch screen, which are slight downgrades from the Pre. The Pixi will offer video and music players and a web browser. Wi-Fi connectivity will not be available on the Pixi.
The Pixi is geared towards customers who mainly use their mobile phone for social networking and messaging. A unique Facebook application and pre-loaded iTunes capability are some of the many fun features on Pixi. Integrated LinkedIn and Yahoo information will be great additions that social networking users will appreciate on the new Palm device. Another interesting quality will be the availability to switch out the back plates with limited edition designs. These original designs will be showcased at New York’s Fashion Week in mid-September.
Even though Palm has not officially announced the price of the Pixi, they did recently reduce cost of the Pre by $50. Since the Pixi is being dubbed as the affordable alternative to the Pre, this should make for a reasonable price point. Along with the Pre, the Pixie will be exclusively available through Sprint.
