PS3 Motion Controller Delayed

Thursday, 21 Jan 2010

Sony has announced a delay for the release of its new Playstation 3 motion controlling peripheral, the Arc. Originally intended for spring of 2010, the launch is expected to take place sometime this fall.

Sony has pushed the release to ensure full software compatibility. Sony claims the Arc will also work with existing titles. Game development is in progress, however, game diversity seems to be the main reason for the setback.

The delay will put Sony in a direct confrontation with Microsoft’s motion controlling system, Project Natal. Microsoft expects to launch Project Natal in November of 2010.

Although similar by nature, Sony’s Arc is more of a cross between Microsoft’s Project Natal and Nintendo’s Wii. The key difference of Project Natal is the controller-free gaming experience. The Arc requires a wand type interface to control movements.

Sony has not yet released pricing information for the Arc. The Playstation Eye camera will, however, be required for the Arc to function properly. The Playstation Eye retails for $32-$40 US.

Sony’s decision to push the release shows an immature product line. Considering the timing issues involved with Microsoft’s Project Natal, Sony has postponed the release date with proper consideration. Let the battle begin.ps3_motion_controller_delayed
