Twitter Hit with File-Sharing Scam
The popular social site Twitter was the target of a plan to utilize “torrents,” or file-sharing sites, to access passwords and usernames. This can lead to the planners gaining entry to not only Twitter, but other sites as well. The reason for this is the habit of many individuals to use the same passwords for different sites. This causes a security headache, especially when the same password is used for online banking, email and other sensitive locations.
Twitter has reacted quickly by resetting the accounts of people who were targeted. They found the problem while monitoring strange site activity. The plan has a long history, with torrents sites being set-up, becoming popular and then utilized as a vehicle to get personal information. These attempts to target sites that are popular social spots has risen dramatically over the past year, and now all consumers will have to be careful when setting up new accounts. One of the suggested tactics is to use a different password for each site. Using the same one for several sites gives an attacker free access to a number of personal areas. It is also imperative to keep passwords private and not share them online or off.
