Death with Dignity: 36 lethal doses taken in Washington in 2009
Death with Dignity is a law that was passed in Washington State. This law, which took effect in 2009, allows terminally ill patients to request a lethal dose of medication and end their lives. Patients must have less than 6 months to live and have the approval of two doctors prior to being issued the prescription.
The statistics from the first year of the laws enactment have been released. So far, 63 people have requested, and received the medication. Of those 63 people a documented 36 of them took the medication and passed away. Most of these documented deaths were to people suffering from cancer.
While this is a hotly contested law, people feel that it should remain in place. Several groups are planning protests and rallies in an effort to have it repealed. The law does not require any doctor, hospital or pharmacist to take part in the practice. Many physicians flat out refuse to issue the prescription. Doctors that do participate do so only after careful consideration of all options available to the patient.
The law was enacted with very strict privacy issues attached. Because of this right to privacy, many details wanted by the opposition groups are unavailable.

I am so happy for the state of Washington. This shows that times are progressing and that many are coming to the conclusion that in most cases, it should be the person’s right to choose. From ending one’s pain and suffering, to ending an unwanted or unsafe pregnancy, the government need not tell people what their morals should be. Hopefully the rest of the nation will catch on to Washington’s freedom of choice.
