Salmonella Risk Leads to McCormick Recall

Friday, 05 Mar 2010

McCormick has recalled several of its more popular items due to a potential salmonella risk.

According to the company, items recalled include packages of French onion dip mix, vegetable dip mix, onion gravy mix and corn stuffing mix because these items contain hydrolyzed vegetable protein manufactured by Basic Food Flavors of Las Vegas, Nev.

Red flags went up when Hunt Valley detected the contamination in their products and reported the problem to the Food and Drug Administration.

While McCormick will not release the number of products that are being recalled, they say they know exactly where the products went and are working with those customers directly to resolve the problem. The company did release that the products were shipped nationwide and overseas. More specifically, they released that the corn stuffing mix went to Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

A spokesperson cautioned consumers to look for hydrolyzed vegetable protein, which is listed on McCormick product packaging as “hydrolyzed soy protein,” “hydrolyzed corn gluten” or “hydrolyzed wheat gluten”.

Though the FDA said that so far nobody has been affected by the contaminated products; however, salmonella should not be taken lightly as it can cause severe gastrointestinal distress and in the worst cases can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections.mccormick-salmonella-recall
