Malicious E-mail Not From Lumberton Trading Company

Monday, 15 Mar 2010

Lumberton Trading Company is a small independent music label based out of Krakow, Poland. Formed in 2004 as a partnership between Hassni Malik and Richard Johnson, the label has signed artists such as Faust, Volga, Human Greed, and Experimental Audio Research. The label has organized and promoted concerts in Krakow as well. Hassni is no longer with the label, but Richard continues to seek new artists that have high standards. Since most of these musicians are not household names, why all the internet buzz?

A malicious e-mail was sent over the weekend, claiming to be from the law firm of Crosby and Higgins representing the Lumberton Trading Company as their clients, stating the recipients were guilty of copyright infringement and were expected to be in court in April. This e-mail contained a virus, which thankfully most common anti-virus programs quickly caught.

This e-mail is indeed fraudulent, as there is a disclaimer on Crosby and Higgins’ homepage stating they do not send unsolicited emails. They have reported the incident to authorities. Whether this phishing e-mail’s intent was to harm the recipients computers or to gather personal information, clearly the best course of action for e-mails from unknown sources is to delete them. lumberton-trading-company
