St. Patrick’s Day is Here: Today we are all Irish
From a “top of the mornin’ to you” to the end of the day, St. Patrick’s day is here again. With many parades, parties, celebrations and green beer, it is a festive and holy holiday all at the same time.
Originating in the fifth century, St. Patrick’s Day has been observed religiously by the Irish for more than a thousand years. March 17 is St. Patrick’s religious feast day and is the anniversary of his death. Celebrated during Lent, the Irish people will attend church in the morning and have their celebrations in the afternoon. Meat is allowed to be eaten on this day, and a traditional meal would be Irish bacon and cabbage.
Today at the White House, the Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen is in town for St. Patrick’s Day. This holiday isn’t just for the Irish anymore, it has been celebrated by the United States for many years. Large and small cities will have parades, everyone is wearing green, wearing shamrocks and drinking the infamous green beer.
However, the drinking has also become a problem in many of these celebrations. Unfortunately, the police need to be very aware of the goings on during these celebrations to keep the party safe and happy for the people.
