Sony Losses Linux OS for PS3
Sony will be releasing a OS upgrade 3.21 on April 1st that will eliminate the ability of using other OS, like Linux.
Officials at Sony have sited security problems with Linux as the reason why. This upgrade will affect older models that came out before the slim tower version. Most PS3 users will not be affected by the change. According to Sony officials this upgrade is optional for players that use other OS. While understanding the risk of possible OS corruption, you have a choice to activate this firmware upgrade or not. The best way is to review your usage and if you do not use the alternate OS, it is advisable to upgrade your system to the new firmware.
As in PC games when security is an issue you roll the dice. With PC’s some people know that if they upgrade they will loose some of your older games. If you do not use Linux based programs on your PS3, you should upgrade of course.
Users that do not upgrade will loose some of the new advantages of the upgrade. This advantages that include the ability to playback copy protected videos and the ability to sign into the Playstation network online.
