PS3 update: Sony to disable PlayStation 3 operating system feature

Friday, 02 Apr 2010

On April 1st 2010 the Sony company issued a statement stating they were going to disable the OS (Operating System) feature from their PlayStation 3 video game systems. The cause of this disablement is attributed to security concerns.

Fortunately, the newer PlayStation systems will not be affected as they were never equipped with that feature to begin with. Disabling this feature helps to ensure that PlayStation 3 owners will continue to have access to a wide range of other content.

For many users, this news is extremely upsetting. People will no longer be able to run Linux or any other Operating System. This has already effected many gamers who have written to PlayStation through their blog to complain.

Users are upset Sony is taking something away from them that they have already paid for, and rightly so.

Sony would like for all of their users to back up any data on their systems before installing any updates. If you try to get around the issue by not installing the update, there will be a penalty to pay. You won’t be able to access the PlayStation Network nor will you be able to play back certain software titles or BluRay videos. linux-on-ps3-will-soon-be-history1

  1. One other tidbit – if you use your PS3 to watch Netflix streaming titles on your TV (via the Netflix PS3 disk) – you must run this update. Without the update, not only will you loose other features (listed above – such as being unable to access the PS Network, PS Store, etc…) but you will also not be able to use the Netflix PS3 disc to watching streaming titles.

SOOOO…if you use/value the Netflix functionality, you’re forced to run this latest update :(

    BOOOOOOO!!!

  2. How effective would a boycott campaign be? If we do not update, we cannot log into the PlayStation Network, and thereby the PlayStation Store (at least on the PS3, which is how I do my transactions) and Sony stands to cease gaining income. After all, new games I buy won’t play, new blu-rays won’t play, I can’t very well download any media from the Store, and I suppose I’ll have to be writing to Netflix how they lost a very satisfied customer because of something they had no control over.

  3. I can’t wait to read the class action on this one for customers who payed for this and now have it taken away with no compensation for the loss of the service. You know Sony just needs some more bad press.

  4. One thing that has happened to a lot of people with the fat ps3 is that now the blu ray drive has a hard time reading disks. Its the point now where I cant get it to read anything. I even cleaned the lens of the drive but still nothing. Think its software related

  5. I am still on firmware 2.76 with my PS3 and Netflix is still working. I am not using a proxy or any DNS tricks either.

  6. Not true about the Netflix PS3 disk. I watched movies on the Netflix disk on my PS3 yesterday and today with no issues and I had yet to run the update. Although I must say that I’m unable to access the PSN store. So running the update right now.

  7. Stop complaining. At least Sony doesn’t charge for internet access unlike Microsoft.

  8. Jeff is right I personally never paid for playstation network. I sold my xbox360 when I got my PS3. Their game Their ball Their rules FREE!

  9. “Stop complaining”? Seriously? People paid to have the other OS installed, and now what’s going to happen. You can’t tell them to stop complaining because they have free internet and MS doesn’t. Who cares about that?

As of late, I’ve been highly displeased with the level of service Sony has provided. I will be buying a 360 soon, and putting my PS3 away.

  10. If a Sony Technician walked into your home and disabled part of your PS3′s functionality that you paid for, would you stand for that? And then if they threatened you, saying they’d take away a certain proportion of your games, would you stand for that? So why it is acceptable via this method?

  11. Wow you people are stupid. April first? April fool’s day?

  12. Also, never get a 360. I had one for a few years, and I got fed up with the crap it gave me. Everything deletes itself, save files and games are inaccessible on another XBOX…even if you have the same hard drive. Not to mention the monster of a power block. Damn thing almost caught fire for playing about 3 hours in a properly ventilated area. Went through 4 of those in less than 2 years. Trust me, I wish I got the PS3 to begin with…

  13. Im gettin really sick of PS3 and all their stupid little problems and required updates all i want to do is play my madden game and i cant even do that. Im not that computer savy and i dont know how to do the back up please will sombody tell me EXCATLY what to do. Im about to go get a x box if this same old shit dont stop

  14. I hope the update don’t kill ya’ll… I watched netflix fine the day before and as of today… The disc doesn’t even seem to be recognized in the system… And to update that… No disc is recognized now… The update was taken yesterday, followed up by a play of “The Darkness”… Today… Nothing… Any help would me much appreciated…
