Playstation 3 Upgrade Kills Linux Install Option
he addition of firmware 3.21 to the Sony Playstation 3 game console has removed the option for users to install other operating systems on the console.
The option to install other operating systems onto the PS3 was available on systems that were produced before the PS3 Slim. Sony sites “security reasons” as the reason behind adding the firmware update that became available on April 1. The update was released after a hacker claims to have been able to bypass PS3 security measures at the time. The exploit was conducted on a machine that used a variant of the Linux operating system. Although the firmware update is optional, users who do not install it will find themselves unable to connect to Playstation’s online gaming network, they may lose the ability to playback certain games, and some DVDs and BluRay discs that require frequent updates to run may no longer be able to be played on the system.
The hacker that announced the exploit George Hotz also known as Geohotz has announced that he will attempt to find a way to bypass the update to allow users the ability to continue installing other operating systems.
Hotz is known for unlocking the iPhone.
