Beginning April 21, 2010 Aetna suspended from Medicare Plans
Due to recent changes the company made to Part D of the prescription drug coverage, customers will no longer be able to enroll in any Medicare Advantage Plans, nor plans for the elderly. This decision was made in a reaction to new sanctions that have been imposed by the government. These sanctions will begin on April 21 and shall remain, until Aetna fixes the problems that CMS has brought to their attention.
Aetna was served with the sanction notice for allegedly “continuing to improperly administer the Medicare drug benefit in the plan’s national standalone prescription drug plan (or PDP) and its 25 Medicare Advantage prescription drug (or MA-PD) contracts”
An official spokesperson of Aetna, stated that “They were working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to resolve the issues.”
Tens of thousands of people were affected by this action, but the suspension does not include anybody who was already signed up under an existing plan. Aetna will soon be contacting customers that were affected by this, in attempts to resolve any issues.
CMS announced that plan members with any questions about how this affects their Part D coverage should contact 1-800-MEDICARE, or their State’s Health Insurance Assistance Program.
