NHS to Conduct Review on Organ Donation Errors
Are you an organ donor or do you know someone that is a donor? The NHS Blood and Transplant has to do a review because of the many errors that have occurred with donor organs.
The agency stated that more than eight hundred thousand people who are registered as organ donors in the UK may have had their personal data and donation preferences recorded incorrectly. This is a major issue because if donors do not have their wishes respected then they will no longer be organ donors. There are over seventeen million organ donors in the UK so it is essential that these issues be resolved quickly and effectively.
The organization has stated that they have confirmed that twenty one organ donors had issues with the wrong organs being donated. The errors were only found in Wales, England, and Scotland so people who live in other countries besides these do not have to worry about these errors. The errors were only discovered in 2009 when NHS sent correspondence to the registered donors asking them about their preferences in regards to donating their organs. Some of the responses that they got did not match their records so the review needed to be done. Hopefully, the review will be completed soon and the records corrected so that donors can be confident in knowing that their wishes will be respected and that only the organs that they specify will be donated.
