Artificial pancreas: New development for diabetics

Thursday, 15 Apr 2010

Medical science never fails to impress us; every time that we turn around there is a new way to recreate a body part or organ. Now, scientists have created an artificial pancreas. This pancreas comes with a laptop, glucose monitor and two pumps. These components work together to monitor the sugar levels in human beings. This can be very beneficial to diabetics who have trouble managing their sugar levels and keeping their levels balanced during the day.

Researchers have stated that the pancreas will put insulin and glucagon into the body so that patients can have the right sugar levels for more than a day at a time. The researchers have found that eleven of their clinical trial patients have had their sugar levels under control while using the artificial pancreas. The participants even ate three meals a day that had a lot of carbohydrates in it and they still did not develop hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar.

Dr. Steven Russell was the leader of the study and he has stated that patients with Type 1 diabetes can benefit from this system to manage their sugar levels so that the body breaks down sugar properly. Complications from diabetes can be severe and include kidney damage, heart disease, amputations and eye damage. Hopefully, these systems will become more readily available to diabetics in the near future. artificial-pancreas-new-development-diabetics1

  1. …how big a deal this is. One of the most frustrating things about being a type 1 is the constant mental calculation of how much to take, how much to eat, and how much to exercise (or not) to avoid the highs and lows. Think about measuring every breath or counting every heartbeat. That’s what it’s like for us.

I hope insurers will quickly see the real medical benefit of an artificial pancreas for those of us who desperately need it.

  2. I am not a diabetic but my brother is and this will really helpmy family. This will make the lives much easier fom millions of people around the world.

    :)

  3. This is good for people who have trouble controlling their blood glucose level, but i already have a pump. My sugar levels are pretty good. When I heard about the artificial pancreas, i was thinking of something that rids you of any devices whatsoever. My main beef with the pumps are that they need constant changing and make me feel abnormal at times. I just want to be free of the pains that come with diabetes, completely. Still, with this news, there is hope and I’m happy that people who struggle with the sugar levels will soon have help.

  4. I am a diabetic. Taking insulin twice in a day. I am always scared about taking insulin. It is terible. I don’t know how I will be free from tension to take insulin. Waiting for new development in treatment for diabetic patient.
