Vitamins and Minerals Can Reduce Breast Cancer Risk
Most people think of bones and osteoporosis when they think of calcium but a new study has shown that women who take calcium and vitamins every day can actually help their bones and cut their risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. A scientific study was recently completed by researchers from the Ponce School of Medicine that is located in Puerto Rico.
The researchers conducted a study on seven hundred and forty four women. Two hundred and seventy eight women of the participants had breast cancer and the other four hundred and sixty six participants were healthy women. These women were then given a questionnaire to fill out about how many vitamins and minerals that they take every day. The researchers then took blood samples to compare DNA repair capacity. The women who had taken a multivitamin every day lowered their risk of developing breast cancer by thirty percent. The women who had taken a calcium supplement every day reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by forty percent.
Vitamins and minerals can help repair the damage that occurs due to free radicals. If women have a healthy intake of calcium and vitamins every day then researchers have stated that they can undo some of this damage and reduce their risk for developing breast cancer. No one thing can prevent breast cancer with one hundred percent certainty but researchers hope that this discovery will help reduce the number of cases of breast cancer.
