Attention Parents: Two More Major Crib Recalls

Friday, 30 Apr 2010

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled thousands of cribs warning these cribs can suffocate or strangle babies.

The CPSC recalled Simplicity and Graco cribs today due to hardware failures.

The Simplicity recall, which is due to at least one death, involves thousands of cribs. Many of these cribs have been previously recalled due to other defects. The Graco recall involves 217,000 dropside cribs which were produced under the name of LaJobi.

The Graco wooden crib recall is due to the fact that the dropside can become detached or can break. This causes a big gap between the side of the crib and the mattress, which can lead to the baby being wedged between the two. If the baby becomes wedged in this space, then he or she can suffocate. According to reports, 99 complaints have been received involving dropside problems with the cribs; however, none of them involved serious injuries. The company is issuing kits which will stabilize the side of the crib that drops, making all sides of this crib stationary.

The Simplicity recall involves all of the full-sized cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames. This crib’s frame has been proven to bend or detach, which can cause the mattress to collapse. This would create a space that a baby can become trapped in, which would lead to suffocation. There was a case in 2008 involving a 1-year-old boy who suffocated while using this crib.

Since 2005, Simplicity has been involved in nearly a dozen recalls due to deaths. wal-mart-target-recall-cribs-baby-suffocates1
