Obesity and Fibromyalgia
People who do not exercise and who are also overweight are at a greater risk to develop fibromyalgia, according to a new research study reported in the May issue of ‘Arthritis Care & Research.’ In order to prevent this pain disorder it is important for a person to maintain their appropriate weight as well as have a regular exercise routine that is followed on a regular basis.
The United States has an estimated 10 million people suffering from fibromyalgia. The disorder generally offers widespread pain to the sufferer with tender points along the body. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue along with sleep disorders, depression, and cognition problems.
Aside from lack of exercise and obesity, fibromyalgia is also triggered by stressful situations in ones life. These situations can include trautmatic events such as an automobile accident. Family history of the disorder is also another consideration that may cause a person to develop fibromyalgia.
The study did not conclude how obesity could increase the risk of developing fibromyalgia. It is suggested, however, that increased levels of some inflammatory proteins play a role. The study, according to the researchers, underlines the relationship among exercise, obesity, and the well-being of the person. A person already diagnosed with the disorder will still benefit from exercising and losing weight. The study revealed that people suffering from the disorder and exercise have less suffering and do far much better than those people who lead a sedentary life. The researchers also discovered that overweight people tend to develop fibromyalgia more frequently.
