Google Continues Acquisitions, Buys BumpTop
In April 2009, newcomer Bump Technologies released BumpTop a 3D, multitouch, desktop system, functional with Windows or Mac computers.
Bumptop enables users to arrange files neatly, in random order or spread them out in a configuration that resembles a “fanned” deck of
cards.
Bump Technologies announced on their web site Sunday, May 2 that Google had purchased the company. Bump said, “This means that BumpTop
(for both Windows and Mac) will no longer be for sale.” Plans for updates are on hold according to the website. The software will reportedly remain available for download for one week.
Google has not released any details of the buy out.
Quattro, a mobile ad platform is a recent addition to Google’s holdings along with LabPixies purchased for a rumored $ 25 million.
LabPixies produces small apps for many types of mobile devices and supplies the widgets used on Google’s iGoogle homepage.
FTC investigation in to possible anti-trust violations is holding up Google’s attempted acquisition of AdMob. Apple was at one time also interested in attempting to acquire AdMob.
According to Network World, Google set a record in 2007 for new acquisitions in one year by purchasing 16 and seems on pace to better that mark by the end of this year.
Google has gobbled up 67 companies in the past nine years and appears to be positioning itself as the world’s next IT superpower.
