Coffee and soda not linked to colon cancer

Saturday, 08 May 2010

If you are someone that drinks large amounts of cola and coffee then you will be excited to know that a new study has found that there may be no link between the consumption of large amounts of these drinks to colon cancer.

A review published online in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute discusses research completed at Harvard School of Public Health that examined over 730, 000 people in 13 studies from North America and Europe. Of these 730,000 people examined colon cancer was developed by 5,6000 people.

The examination looked at the amount of cola or coffee consumed by each subject and found that drinking as much as six 8-ounce cups of coffee didn’t boost the risk of colon cancer. It is also stated that drinking as much as 18-ounces of sugar filled drinks did not lead to an increased risk of colon cancer. However, the amount of subjects that fell into this category were very few and this may lead to inaccurate results. The additional good news is that there was little variation observed in the study based on factors such as gender or alcohol consumption. However, the study did observe a small risk boost for any heavy tea drinkers that consumed more than four 8-once cups of non-herbal tea a day. It is important to note that only small amounts of subjects existed that consumed this amount of tea and this means additional research is needed. In response to these findings the Arizona Cancer Center indicated that sugar-filled drinks are usually consumed as children and that a link would develop earlier in life. coffee-soda-not-linked-colon-cancer
