Steam portal now avalible on the Mac
The downloadable gaming platform, Steam, is finally coming to Apple’s Mac computers on Wednesday. Steam was developed by gaming company Valve and released on Windows PCs in 2004. Steam is a digital portal that allows users to view and download demo games, video games, and patches online instead of buying them at a retail location. After 2005, Valve opened up the portal to other game developers and Steam now boasts over 1000 available titles with an estimated 25 million users worldwide.
When Steam launches for Macs on Wednesday, they will not boast the full array of video games but subsequent titles from other developers will come online in the coming weeks. Runic Games’ RPG style game, Torchlight, and Valve’s own first person sci-fi puzzler, Portal will be among the initial games available to Mac users when Steam comes online on Wednesday.
The Mac version of Steam will come with “Steam Play” which allows a user to download a video game to any PC or Mac after they have purchased it just one time. Valve’s “Steam Cloud” service will also be available on the Mac version. Steam Cloud allows a user to synchronize game settings across all the computers on which a game is downloaded.
The only knock on the Mac version so far is the appearance of the interface for Steam. Many elements to the portal have more of a Windows feel to them than a Mac feel. The navigation toolbar for instance has large text links to the Steam Store and game library instead of colorful icons that are typical on Macs.

I wonder when they will actually release the client….I’ve been waiting since 12:00 CST.
They’ll release it today! . . . valve time.
So they MIGHT release it at 11:59pm tonight, or maybe tomorrow morning, or they might even push it off another week if they feel the program is not up to snuff yet. At least we’re assured that the product they eventually come out with will be flawless.
Ditto here. I used to use steam all the time, but I moved to Mac about a year ago. It was the one thing I was missing.
So are we going to have to wait even longer to download steam? >.< Because it’s not on the website
