Verizon Wireless to Release Android TabletVerizon Wireless to Release Android Tablet

Wednesday, 12 May 2010

Verizon Wireless and Google Inc are teaming up to create a new tablet computer.

Verizon’s chief executive, Lowell McAdam, revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that Verizon Wireless and Google are partnered to bring a tablet computer to Verizon’s mobile market, and that Verizon Wireless is looking at several different options to strengthen their relationship with Google. McAdam declined to give any time frame on when their tablet may become available to the public.

It is likely that any Verizon Wireless/Google tablet will feature Google’s mobile operating system, Android. Android operating system surpassed Apple’s iPhone operating system in units bought for the first quarter of 2010, making it the second most bought mobile operating system, behind Research In Motion (BlackBerry), for the first quarter of 2010. All major American cell phone carriers have an Apple Android device in their stock, but Verizon Wireless seems to have the strongest partnership with Google, as evidenced by the hugely successful Verizon Wireless/Android OS Moto Droid and the recently released Verizon Wireless/Android OS Incredible.

Apple’s version of a tablet, iPad, recently had a successful launch, increasing the tablet market. With the rumored HP/Palm tablet, Hurricane, coming at the end of 2010, a Verizon Wireless/Google tablet would be the third entry into the tablet market in 2010. It is unclear if the tablet market is big enough for three successful launches, but creators of major mobile operating systems are banking on the emerging tablet market to further the reach of their products.
