Google Pounding the Competition with Android 2.2

Friday, 21 May 2010

Google continues to rock the tech world during their conference this week. First they rolled out Google TV, now the updated version of the Android operating system has got techies in a frenzy. Apple may want to watch out, Google is steam rolling ahead of the competition.

Android 2.2 or affectionately named Froyo has been unveiled, and it is spectacular. The speech given by keynote speaker Vic Gundotra was filled with pokes and thinly veiled insults at the recent products rolled out by Apple. Froyo is expected to be available by the end of this year. Some key features of the new OS include the Adobe Flash support system. Apple has already alienated Adobe, paving the way for the partnership between the 2 forward thinking companies.

Froyo is boasting much faster speeds, as much as five times faster to be exact. Android phones will have the capability to be used as Wi-fi hot spots. There is not a lot of information about this new feature and users may face additional charges to use it. An SD slot will allow users to back up Android apps directly to an SD card. The best part about the Froyo? It will most likely be available on regular phones, not only smartphones.

This will help put the Android OS in the hands of millions more users who could not normally afford the expensive smartphones, thus increasing Google’s presence in the cell phone world. A recent Gartner report revealed Google has risen to number 4 in the smartphone industry. Google’s latest roll out will most likely send them to the top. nexus-one-wifi
