Your face is the new face of Google’s search page

Thursday, 03 Jun 2010

Google is always trying to give it’s users what they want. Google announced that users can add personal photos to the background of it’s search page. This is a move that will let you ditch it’s traditional boring all white background.

There will be three different methods for placing the photo on to search page. The first option is to upload a picture directly from their PC. You can also select a picture from your personal Picasa, Google’s online photo service. The third option is to pick a background picture from the public Picasa photo site which is open to everyone.

Changing the background to your favorite photo will be easy. A link will be in the lower left corner of the Google web search page. It is possible that you may not yet see the link, if that is the case it is because Google has not added the feature yet to your account and it should appear over the next week.

My concern is that the image will increase the load time. After all one of the beautiful parts of Google’s plain vanilla search page is it’s simplicity and fast loading time. According to Google though the page will still load at the same speed. To accomplish this what will happen is the photo will be loaded into your browser’s cache, so in essence you won’t really be loading the image from Google’s server.

It’s will be fun to experiment with and see how well it works. I do admit I love my plain white Google page, but maybe they can change my mind. customize-google-search-page
