Apple’s Secret Security Updates

Saturday, 19 Jun 2010

Apple Company decided to update their security software on the Mac OS X operating system, without telling anyone. They decided to update the security system by secretly patching the XProtect.plist, which is a file that contains several signatures to detect the HellRTS threats on the Mac system. These malware programs have been disguised as Mac’s photo editing program called iPhoto by hackers.

With the iPhoto malware, hackers are able to capture screenshots and access files on the users system. This can lead to heavy theft of personal information, which can lead to identity theft, credit card theft, or other serious problems.

These patches were also upgraded to protect against backdoor Trojan Horses which allow hackers to control the MacBook or iMac from a remote location, without actually seeing it. Apple, like most other operation systems creators, chose to do these fixes secretly because they find that several users are oblivious to these security threats that can seriously damage their systems.

Apple has been viewed as a far safer alternative to the Windows PCs. Apple finds the process of updating these security patches to be particularly embarrassing. This is believed to be a false sense of security, because several Apply employees tell potential customers that it is impossible to get a virus on a Mac system, and that the customers should not worry about it. With this sense of security that their employees work so hard to instill within customers, it is no wonder that Apply decided to keep the upgrades and patches a secret. apples-secret-security-updates-mac-os-x
