Sixty-thousand Pounds of Byson Recalled Due to E. Coli Link

Saturday, 03 Jul 2010

Rocky Mountain Natural Meats located in Colorado has recalled 60000 pounds of tenderized or ground bison after the FDA established a link to E. Coli. The establishment comes after five people have become ill as a result of purchasing bison made by the company. Products included in the recall were sold between may 21 and May 27 2010. All of these products had a “sell or freeze” date that fell during Mid-June. Of the six different products linked to food poisoning, fiver were carried in KRN, Market Basket, Price Chopper, and Whole Foods stores. One of the products was distributed at restaurants and food service distributors in Utah and Arizona. The USDA claims it is working with the Public Health Departments of Colorado as well as New York while the investigation remained open. It is also working with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the cause of the C. Coli.

Symptoms of E. Coli 0157:H7 include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and severe cramps. In severe cases, kidney failure has been reported. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described above, you should contact your health care professional immediately. To find out if your bison is part of the recall, look at the establishment number. If it is a recalled product, the establishment number will be EST. 20247. The most common brand name is Great Range.

Bison meat that made the recall list include 16-ounce packages of ground all-natural bison, 16-ounce packages of all-natural brown buffalo meat, and Great Range’s 12-ounce all natural steak medallions.
