Frutcose Blamed For Causing High Blood Pressure

Monday, 05 Jul 2010

People addicted to soda and other various drinks and foods that contain high fructose corn syrup or just fructose in general, may want to rethink their habit. The sugary substance is found in nearly every soda on the market today. It is even found in some natural fruits and most importantly, table sugar. Sugar is in nearly every product a consumer is offered today. They may not even realize they are consuming the ingredient, unless an observant person reads the ingredient list.

A new study is providing another reason for cutting back on the substance. Fructose is now being blamed for high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease, heart attack and stroke. The latest study involved a more comprehensive view of the amount of fructose people really consume other than the obvious culprit, soda.

Researchers evaluated data from 4,500 adults. The data was taken from surveys that included questions about all the foods and drinks each person consumed that contained fructose. The average amount of fructose consumed was 74 grams a day. That equates to about four cans of soda. None of the people surveyed had high blood pressure, but 33 percent were considered to be on the borderline and 8 percent had hypertension. The adults who consumed higher levels of fructose were at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure. Researchers are expected to perform more studies on the matter to determine the correlation.

The study and its results have been published in the July 1st edition of Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. soft_drinks
