Eye Doctors Warn of Danger from Lady Gaga Oversize Lens

Friday, 09 Jul 2010

The American Academy of Ophthalmology has issued a warning to anyone who wants to emulate Lady Gaga’s look in the video “Bad Romance”. Lady Gaga wears over sized contact lenses in the video which gives a doe eyed or larger than normal eye. The look became popular shortly after the Lady Gaga video hit the airwaves, prompting the warning to be issued by the American Academy of Ophthalmology soon after.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology said in their statement that wearing this lens was, “an emerging and potentially dangerous trend among teenagers and young adults.” The large circle lens extends over the iris and magnifies the outward appearance of the lens.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, these particular lenses have been banned from the market in the United States since 2005 but they are still easily available over the Internet. The statement issued by the eye doctors association went on to say, “inflammation and pain can occur from improperly fitted, over-the-counter lenses and lead to more serious problems including corneal abrasions and blinding infections.”

Any lens that is purchased should always be fitted by an eye professional and the purchase of these lenses over the internet can lead to serious eye problems in the future. The American Academy of Ophthalmology concluded their statement by issuing this dire warning to anyone who owns a pair of circle lenses and experiences, “pain, burning, redness, tearing or sensitivity to light while wearing any type of contact lenses,” should consult an ophthalmologist. lady-gaga-eye-contact-lens
