Possible Link Between Skin Cancer and HPV Infection Revealed in New Study

Friday, 09 Jul 2010

A research team led by Dr. Margaret Karagas reported a possible link could exist between Human Papillomavirus, HPV, and skin cancer. Study findings correlate with previous research showing a relationship between HPV and skin cancer in patients who once received an organ transplant. However, the new study was guided more towards general populace. People infected with 3 strains of HPV were 44 percent more susceptible to skin cell carcinoma. Those with more than 3 strains were 51 percent susceptible.

HPV infection has been associated with other forms of cancer including cervical, throat and vaginal cancer. Gardasil has been used in prevention especially for women who are at risk for vaginal cancer. Immunity against several strains of HPV, however, does not guard against strains associated with other forms of cancer including skin cell carcinoma.

Other researchers were quick to comment on the study. Dr. Stephen Mandy from the American Society for Dermatological Surgery at the University of Miami believes that other factors may be involved. More than 100 forms of HPV have been identified and it is difficult to link any one strain to skin cancer. Each form infects different areas of the body. The primary cause of skin cancer is still linked to sun exposure.

The best prevention for skin cancer is to avoid excess sun exposure. It also helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle with diet and sufficient sleep to maintain a healthy immune system. Proper treatment of open wounds is also important, as this is one method of entry for HPV. link-between-hpv-skin-cancer
