With A 7% Rally In May, Bing’s Market Share Is Up 78% Since It’s Launch
Since its launch last June, Microsoft’s Bing search engine has made consistent gains in market share growing 88% in 12 months. Just last month Bing experienced a 7% rally in its US market share with search engine giant Google losing 1% and Yahoo remaining steady for the same period. This short term advance while impressive is more an indication that Microsoft is committed to battle Google for the top position especially considering that Microsoft will incorporate their new partner Yahoo into their plan later this year.
In a 10 year deal, Bing and Yahoo will maintain their own names but Bing will power Yahoos results in exchange Yahoo will handle paid advertising for Bing. This partnership is expected to cause Google to lose even more market share as more consumers get acquainted with the new Bing search engine.
Despite the threat, Microsoft still has some hurdles to handle. The first being that Google has become synonyms with searching on the internet. Many people just say they with “google it” to find answers to their questions or shopping experience. Second, consumers have come to think that bad search results are the result of bad queries. Bing’s ad campaign is set to address that issue promoting the tag line: “It’s not just you”.
Microsoft’s goal with the Bing search experience is to offer a balance of information and product solutions, including real time pricing on some items. While these new market share numbers may not strike fear in the heart of Google now, if this trend continues, we could see a new search leader in the coming months.
