Doe Eyes Now, Possible Infection or Blindness Later!
A recent popular fad inspired by Lady Gaga has inspired many young girls to wear cosmetic “circle” contact lenses. These circle lenses go beyond the iris when placed into the eye and give an appears of bigger doe shaped eyes. This look appeared in one of Lady Gaga’s recent videos. Since then many have noticed them appearing in a neighborhood near you, being worn by young teenage girls.
While the look may be attractive, it does not come without risks. Contacts, even cosmetic contacts in the United States require a prescription to be purchased and for good reason. Contacts must be fitted specifically for the individual that will be wearing them. Regular eye care exams are essential. Nonetheless, these young teens are mainly purchasing their prescription “circle” contacts online, avoiding this requirement. The concern is contacts that are not properly fitted can lead to abrasions of the eyes, infection, and in some cases blindness. Some teenagers ordering and wearing this new fad of “circle” contact lenses are unaware of this. They are very pleased with the look created and do not realize that they could be damaging their eyes permanently.
This has many ophthalmologist concerned. So, they are speading the word of warning. If you must wear these cosmetic contacts, please note they are not without risks. Please purchase these through a U.S. ophthalmologist and get the proper exams and fitting necessary. Also, proper care of these contacts are essential. If you purchase these through an ophthalmologist you will receive instructions on proper care and maintenance of your lenses.
