Firefox 4 Beta Shows Improvements

Monday, 12 Jul 2010

A beta release of Firefox 4 is now available. Although it has become the number two internet browser over the past few years it has lost ground to Google’s Chrome and to Apple’s Safari browser. The goal of the folks working on Firefox is to regain some of that lost momentum.

The speed of Firefox has been improved more than 25% since its most recent stable release of Firefox 3.6.6. The speed is still lacking behind Chrome and Safari but it blows Internet Explorer 8 away.

The most noticeable change at first glance is that the tabs now appear along the top instead of just below the address bar. Mozzilla is calling the address bar an “Awesome Bar” and has reduced the space used by it to give the screen more room to show you the actual web page. The navigation buttons also have a more rounded look that makes them appear more modern.

When you load a webpage a clock like icon appears on the tab that shows the speed of the page being downloaded and how much more there is to go. This is a nice addition for those of us that are impatient.

The first look at the new beta shows that Firefox is getting a more modern look and improved speed. Perhaps the biggest advantage of Firefox is the large number of add-ons that are available. This is the one area where Firefox continues to be well ahead of the competition. Overall the new version appears to be stable and should be a welcomed update for internet users. firefox-4-beta-shows-improvements

  1. I had just gone a’pokin aroun, to hunt me up some kina alternative to Firefox — not a small thing to contemplate!

After un-installing Chrome (and learning from the post-op quizzery from Google that there was something called “Safari” and another called “Opera”), I opened searches for those 2 items, and came across your post, here, about a new beta for Firefox.

Maybe I’ll hold off on the drastic change I was seriously mulling…

Where can I find a download of the new Firefox Beta?

    Thanks.

  2. I’m old and don’t put much stock in appearance; my interest is in speed and efficiency, and I want to be able to customize settings and features. One annoyance which causes consternation and may cause my switching to another browser is this, “To display this page, Firefox must send information that will repeat any action (such as a search or order confirmation) that was performed earlier.”
