Childhood cold virus could lead to development of obesity

Tuesday, 21 Sep 2010

A new study from the University of California – San Diego, has stated that children that contract a cold virus are more likely to be obese when they are older.
Adenovirus 36 is the supposed culprit that can make children overweight when they are older. Children considered obese tended to have the antibodies to this virus in their system.

However, many people are disputing these findings.

The researchers believe that by finding a way to prevent the spread of the virus they can reduce the number of children that will grow up to become over weight.

“This shows that body weight regulation and the development of obesity are very complicated issues,” said the study’s senior author, Dr. Jeffrey Schwimmer, an associate professor of pediatrics at UC San Diego and director of Weight and Wellness at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. “There are children who eat all the wrong things in all the wrong quantities who are not obese.”
Further research is needed before any solid conclusions will be made.
