Twitter Hacked With Virus By Matstra

Tuesday, 21 Sep 2010

SAN FRANCISCO – A massive attack on Twitter began circulating this morning, hijacking user accounts around the world and spreading messages containing malicious code.

The attack uses the function “mouseover”, which generates information on a link on Twitter. But it is not necessary to keep the mouse pointer over or click the link, the mere fact that the message be on your timeline (originated from another infected user) is enough to run the code.

The messages appear to have been distributed by the user @ Matsta. It seems that the attack has not been used for purpose other than harass users around the world. A message from the profile indicates a music producer and asks who “likes good music,” follow it.

The profile @ Safety, responsible for the safety messages Microblog said the XSS flaw was identified and an update solved the problem. However, users are still claiming that the fault is active by clicking on profiles and links.

Spams is circulating calling users to check out the new Twitter. The goal is to attract more users and continue spreading the attack. Until a permanent solution is found, it is best to avoid the network and access your profile by third party applications
such as Tweetdeck, Seesmic, etc.
