Google has developed a self-driving car. The “driverless cars” are able to avoid accidents by using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging).

A laser that revolves and gathers data about the world around it, LIDAR can tell if the car is on dirt or paved road, where trees and stop signs are, and what speed the car is going. GPS tells the car its location.

Driven over 100,000 miles without accident, or driver, Google estimates the car could save thousands of lives every year.

The Google car has only been in one accident, when it was rear ended by another car.
