NASA’s Ground Breaking Discovery

A major discovery has been made by the government run space program whose funding has been the target of much debate during these harsh economic times. NASA’s Kepler mission has indeed discovered what appears to be an Earth-like planet in a habitable zone of space orbiting a star similar to our own sun.

There is still much follow up research to be done to accurately determine whether it is a planet or a star, but many have already begun to celebrate its discovery with high hopes. The planet has been named Kepler-22b, and is already considered a milestone by many scientists in the search for habitable planets.

Kepler 22b is about 600 light years away for Earth. It is larger than Earth, but orbits its sun at a very similar speed. It takes about 290 days for Kepler 22b to complete a full rotation. The Kepler mission has found many possible candidates for Earth-like habitable planets, but non as promising as this.
